How One German School Is Redefining Sustainability Education Nationwide
A school in North Rhine-Westphalia has become a model for sustainability education in Germany. Nelson Mandela Comprehensive School in Bergisch Gladbach won the German School Prize in 2023 for its innovative approach. The institution blends traditional lessons, independent study, and hands-on projects to embed global sustainability goals into daily learning.
Yet despite such progress, a recent study reveals a nationwide gap. Only about 12 percent of German schools held sustainability certification by the 2023/2024 academic year, falling short of policy targets.
The school's approach centres on three pillars: subject-based teaching, self-directed learning periods, and cross-disciplinary projects. These elements align with UNESCO's Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which structures four project phases into each school year. Rather than treating sustainability as an extra, the school has made it a foundation of its curriculum.
This model emerged after a major restructuring. The institution transformed from a traditional secondary school into a 'house of learning,' designed to serve a diverse student population. Its work reflects broader goals set by the UN's 2015 Sustainable Development Agenda, which tasks schools with preparing learners to act sustainably by 2030.
In June 2024, Germany's education ministers updated national ESD guidelines to better match Agenda 2030. The new recommendations push for deeper integration of sustainability into everyday schooling. North Rhine-Westphalia's own framework goes further, aiming to empower students to build a fair and sustainable society by the end of the decade.
However, research from Freie Universität Berlin highlights a persistent challenge. Many schools still treat ESD as an optional addition rather than a core part of education. The study found little evidence of meaningful integration across the system, leaving a divide between policy ambitions and classroom practice.
Nelson Mandela Comprehensive School demonstrates how sustainability can shape daily learning. Its award-winning model contrasts with the broader picture, where fewer than one in eight German schools have achieved ESD certification. The updated 2024 guidelines signal a stronger push for change, but implementation remains uneven across the country.
