How BOMESI Is Empowering Black and Diverse Media Owners for Long-Term Success

The Black-Owned Media Equity & Sustainability Institute (BOMESI) is making strides in supporting Black and diverse media owners. Founded by Rhonesha Byng and DéVon Christopher Johnson, the organization helps brands and funders connect with underrepresented publishers. Its work now spans education, economic growth, and community-building across the media sector.

BOMESI began with a database of 50 Black-owned media platforms. That number has since expanded to over 300, reflecting its growing influence in the industry. The organization operates on three core pillars: ecosystem development, education, and economic empowerment.

The BOMESI Accelerator plays a key role in this mission. All its past cohorts have continued operating after graduation, showing the programme's lasting impact. Participants receive training to become 'business-ready' for larger brand deals and advertisement partnerships. The goal is to turn short-term opportunities into long-term sustainability for smaller publishers.

One of BOMESI's standout tools is the Bomisi Scale, an IP-backed revenue model. It allows groups of publishers to secure deals together while sharing proceeds to support smaller sites. This collective approach strengthens bargaining power and fosters collaboration.

The annual BOMESI Summit further reinforces community ties. It brings together Black and diverse media owners to network, share insights, and build partnerships. Recently, the organization received a $750,000 grant from Press Forward. The funding will expand its ad network and accelerator programmes.

Looking ahead, BOMESI is preparing to launch applications for Cohort 5 of the Accelerator. Plans are also underway to refine the collective model, making it easier for agencies and brands to engage with diverse publishers.

BOMESI's efforts have already expanded its database from 50 to over 300 media platforms. With new funding and an upcoming accelerator cohort, the organization continues to create pathways for underrepresented publishers. Its focus remains on turning short-term gains into lasting business success.
