Honolulu's Newest Gem: A Family-Run Vietnamese Cafe Opens in Kakaako

Having lived in Kakaako for the past seven years, I always thought one thing missing from the dining scene was more quick, casual, grab-and-go options. Recently, a wave of new openings has begun to fill that need, reflecting the area's fast-paced, ever-growing lifestyle. One of those additions is Rollin' Rolls Cafe, a family-owned spot serving Vietnamese favorites.

Owner Tam Tran shares that Rollin' Rolls Cafe was born from a desire to create something meaningful for her family while building a sustainable future rooted in Vietnamese cuisine. Along the way, family friends - who were former owners of a small Vietnamese takeout shop at Ward Warehouse - served as mentors.

The menu features a lineup of classic Vietnamese staples, including chicken spring rolls ($11), shrimp summer rolls ($11) and barbecue chicken or pork banh mi ($13). But, it's the specialty items that truly stand out. The Hidden Crunch Rolls ($17) are a must-order: bite-sized fried spring rolls wrapped in fresh rice paper, these offer the perfect balance of crispy and refreshing.

Other highlights include the nem lui skewer ($5), a grilled pork skewer packed with flavor, and the Sai Gon breakfast combo ($18+), which pairs your choice of a banh mi and a coffee from the Viet Phin coffee menu - prices vary depending on what you choose.

For those seeking lighter, nourishing options, the banh mi lineup also includes lemongrass tofu ($13) and a veggie version ($12.75). The special banh mi ($13.25), layered with housemade pate, mayonnaise and tender steamed pork, delivers a satisfying balance of savory richness and fresh crunch.

The cafe's plate offerings cater to those looking for a mixed plate, with a choice of rice or vermicelli noodles served alongside tossed salad and pickled vegetables. Protein options include golden chicken, pork or spring rolls (all $16.75).

The lemongrass tofu plate stood out - bold and aromatic with a subtle hint of curry-like spices, making it a standout plant-forward option.

While the food shines, the Vietnamese coffee options deserve equal attention. Served as 16-ounce cold drinks, options range from a classic black coffee ($6) to a pandan latte ($7.50) and coffee latte ($6.75).

The brown coffee with condensed milk ($6.50) offers a perfectly balanced afternoon boost, while specialty drinks like salted foam coffee and ube foam coffee ($7.50) have quickly become customer favorites.

For something refreshing, the sparkling lemonades ($6.50) and Thai tea ($6.50) round out the menu, alongside non-caffeinated options like choco cloud milk ($6.25).

Beyond the menu, it's the warmth of Tran and her team that ties everything together. Each dish reflects care and a deep sense of pride in sharing their culture through food.

Whether you're stopping in for a quick bite or lingering over coffee with friends, this cafe offers a welcoming space that feels both convenient and comforting.

In a neighborhood that's constantly on the move, Rollin' Rolls Cafe delivers exactly what Kakaako has been craving - fresh flavors, a community gathering spot and a reason to slow down, even if just for a few bites.
