Hodo's Plant-Based Tofu Takes Germany by Storm with 40% Annual Growth
Hodo, a US-based maker of plant cell-based tofu, has rapidly expanded its presence in Germany since 2020. The brand's organic, protein-rich products are now stocked in over 500 stores, including Rewe, Edeka, and organic shops. Demand for vegan alternatives has driven annual growth of around 40%.
Founded in Oakland in 2006, Hodo specialises in organic, non-GMO, and gluten-free tofu. Each package contains more than 36 grams of protein, along with essential amino acids, calcium, and iron. The company's growth in Germany follows partnerships with importers like Taifun Tofu and online retailers such as Amazon.
To make healthy eating easier, Hodo offers pre-marinated and seasoned tofu options. The brand also shares quick recipes on its website, including Coconut and Curry Soup and Kung Pao Tofu. Founder Minh Tsai encourages whole-food plant proteins like beans and tofu for long-term health.
Recently, rising interest in GLP-1 medications has boosted tofu's popularity. Consumers increasingly see it as a simple, nutritious alternative to animal products. Hodo's expansion reflects this shift, with plans to reach even more German stores by 2025.
Hodo's tofu is now widely available in supermarkets, organic shops, and restaurants across Germany. The brand's focus on convenience and nutrition aligns with growing demand for indoor plants-based foods. Sales continue to climb as more consumers choose tofu for its health benefits and versatility.
