Hangzhou's Banshan celebrates Lixia with ancient rituals and vibrant traditions
Residents of Banshan in Hangzhou gathered in large numbers to mark the Beginning of Summer, known as Lixia, with a vibrant parade. Over 300 people took part in the event, blending ancient traditions with community spirit. The celebrations included rituals, games, and food tied to the seasonal transition from spring to summer. The Beginning of Summer, or Lixia, occurs annually between May 4 and 6, signalling the start of warmer months. This year’s parade featured a symbolic formation of 12 adults and 12 teenagers. Their participation highlighted the passing down of customs linked to the 24 solar terms, ensuring these traditions endure for future generations.
One of the day’s most cherished activities was the 'weighing ritual'. Participants sat on a chair suspended from a large steelyard scale while their weight was announced aloud. The practice symbolises hopes for good health and strength throughout the summer. Food also played a key role in the festivities. Locals enjoyed Wumi rice, a purple-black glutinous variety, believed to ward off mosquito bites. Meanwhile, children took part in traditional games like 'egg fighting', where hard-boiled eggs are tapped together to symbolise warding off bad luck and inviting good fortune. Beyond the parade, younger participants engaged in outdoor activities such as picking peas, digging for wild bamboo shoots, and cooking wild rice meals over makeshift stoves. These customs reflect wishes for children to grow up strong and resilient. The Banshan Lixia traditions, dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), have been revived in recent years by local residents. Additionally, the 'Banshan mud cat figurine', a local intangible cultural heritage practice, has been reimagined into modern cultural products, spreading its appeal through social media.
The Banshan Lixia customs combine practical wisdom with cultural expression, aligning daily life with natural rhythms. The parade and its activities serve as a reminder of the community’s deep-rooted connection to tradition. These celebrations continue to thrive, blending historical practices with contemporary creativity.
