Hanau's Hidden Gem: A Family-Run Delicatessen Wins Hearts and Mayor's Praise
Fine fresh cheese mousse, aromatic olives, premium salmon, handpicked cold cuts and cheeses, artisanal bread, specialty oils, balsamic vinegars, fresh pasta, wine, and coffee—all this and more awaits at Emma's Delikat.essen on Gustav-Hoch-Straße 45 in Hanau. This small but exquisite shop offers a selection unmatched in the region.
"Many of our guests don't just come from Hanau—they travel from the surrounding area, and some even make a special trip from Frankfurt to find products here that are hard to come by elsewhere," says owner Luca Gesch proudly during a visit from Mayor Claus Kaminsky.
Gesch opened the gourmet shop just over a year ago, naming it after his younger sister, Emma. He is also supported by his mother, Martina Gesch, who brings her experience and keen eye to product selection, preparation, and presentation.
In front of the store, a small covered terrace invites customers to linger. Thoughtfully decorated and heated in winter, guests can enjoy coffee, wine, or a fresh antipasti platter there. "Our space may be compact, but we make the most of it. So far, everyone has found something they love," says Gesch. For small events of up to 15 people, Emma's Delikat.essen also offers tailored catering. Custom gift baskets for any occasion are another part of their service.
"For us, it's all about authentic flavor, honest products, and a warm, family-like atmosphere," explains Gesch. His passion for fine food dates back to his youth: "My father ran a wholesale business in Frankfurt's central market hall for many years, and my mother once had her own delicatessen in Niederrodenbach."
Mayor Kaminsky was clearly impressed: "I think your shop is wonderful! You offer an outstanding selection from carefully chosen producers, with a clear focus on quality. Despite the limited space, the range is surprisingly extensive. Businesses like yours give our city its unique character and are highly attractive to customers seeking something special. You certainly won't have seen the last of me here!" he promised, presenting a certificate for a tree sponsorship from Planet Tree. "With this, we hope you'll put down roots in Hanau—just like the tree we've planted in your name," he added.
