Hà Giang's Hidden Gem Serves Authentic Tày Cuisine in a Thatched-Roof Haven

Hạ Thành Quán restaurant in Hà Giang 1 Ward has become a popular spot for visitors seeking authentic local flavours. The eatery, designed like a traditional thatched-roof house of the Tày ethnic group, draws crowds with its rustic charm and hearty regional dishes. Many diners arrived ahead of the province’s annual marathon and trail run, filling the place to near capacity. The restaurant specialises in north-eastern Vietnamese cuisine, serving dishes on a single tray packed with local favourites. Black chicken, known for its rich flavour and high nutritional value, appears in multiple forms—boiled, steamed, fried, or honey-grilled. A comforting bowl of black chicken soup, filled with vermicelli and sliced green onion, is a standout choice.

Grilled pork, another signature dish, features pork marinated in wild herbs like mắc mật and mắc khén. The meat’s earthy aroma pairs well with fresh cucumber, carrots, and other vegetables. Tiny river shrimp, stream fish, purple sticky rice, and boiled greens complete the spread.

Beyond food, the restaurant immerses guests in Tày culture. Two large wooden đàn tính instruments greet visitors at the entrance, hinting at the cultural experience inside. On weekends, live singing and dancing performances take place, while homemade wine is served in a traditional manner. Hạ Thành Quán blends traditional architecture, bold flavours, and lively entertainment. The restaurant’s focus on Tày heritage and regional specialities continues to attract both locals and tourists. With its warm hospitality and unique offerings, it stands out as a must-visit in Hà Giang.
