Asparagus from mid-March - this is the price per kilogram - Germany's asparagus harvest kicks off weeks early in 2025 thanks to warm spring

Germany's asparagus season is off to an unusually early start in 2025. Warm spring weather has pushed the first harvests forward by weeks, with farmers expecting high-quality spears ahead of Easter. Prices are set to remain steady as supplies increase.

The season's kickoff in southwestern Germany could begin as early as mid-March, far sooner than usual. A rapid shift from winter cold to near-summer temperatures has accelerated growth, creating what growers call a 'turbocharged' start. By March 20, significant harvests are expected across the south, west, and north.

Last year, Germany produced nearly 105,000 tons of asparagus, mostly white varieties. Around 1,350 farms cultivated the vegetable across 19,200 hectares. The Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers predicts enough supply for all by Easter, with quality rated as excellent due to the favourable conditions.

Prices will vary by grade. Lower-quality or soup asparagus will sell for under €10 per kilogram, while premium 'Sunday asparagus' will cost between €10 and €20. Overall, costs should stay stable, avoiding sharp fluctuations as the season progresses.

The early harvest and stable pricing come as good news for consumers. With ample supply expected by late March, the 2025 season looks promising for both farmers and buyers. The weather's role in boosting quality and quantity sets a positive tone for the months ahead.
