€230 million for new Kiel institute building - Germany invests €230M in cutting-edge food safety and nutrition research hub
The German government is funding a major new research centre in Kiel. A €230 million investment will expand the Max Rubner Institute's work on food safety and consumer health. The facility is expected to open in 2029 and will occupy a large site dedicated to advanced scientific studies.
The new building will cover 6,250 square meters on a 12,500-square-meter plot. Its design includes structural isolation to reduce vibrations, ensuring precision for sensitive microscopes and measuring tools. Researchers will focus on how nutrition and individual foods affect human health.
The Max Rubner Institute currently employs around 700 staff across four locations, with its main office in Karlsruhe. The Kiel site will bring together specialists in health-related consumer protection and food security. Construction is underway, with operations set to begin by 2029.
Once completed, the facility will strengthen Germany's research into food safety and nutritional impacts. The €230 million project aims to provide state-of-the-art conditions for scientific analysis. Experts will use the space to study health risks and benefits linked to everyday foods.
