Consumers are increasingly opting for mineral water - German mineral water sales surge in 2025 as flavoured options boom
Mineral water remains a firm favourite among German consumers, with sales rising again in 2025. The latest figures show a 2.4% increase in consumption, reaching nearly 10.2 billion litres. Gerolsteiner led the market as the top-selling brand, reinforcing its long-standing position in the sector.
Germans drank more mineral water last year, with per capita consumption climbing from 125.6 to 128.8 litres. This marks a steady recovery from 2024's modest growth, though volumes still fall short of pre-pandemic levels—back in 2019, the average person consumed 139.7 litres.
Carbonated and lightly sparkling varieties continued to dominate, making up over 70% of total sales. Still water also saw a notable rise, with sales up by 6.1%. Meanwhile, flavoured mineral water experienced the sharpest growth, surging 18% compared to 2024. The overall output of the mineral springs sector, including mineral water-based soft drinks, expanded by 1.2% to 13.2 billion litres. Industry experts link the trend to a broader shift towards healthier drinking habits among consumers.
The 2025 figures confirm mineral water's enduring popularity in Germany. With consumption rising and flavoured options gaining traction, the sector shows signs of steady expansion. The market's growth reflects changing preferences, though total volumes have yet to match those seen before the pandemic.
