DLRG: 'Hundreds of life-threatening situations' in the water - German Lifeguards Save Lives as Drowning Deaths Decline in 2025
German lifeguards have played a vital role in water safety this year, with around 6,500 volunteers deployed across DLRG rescue stations. Their efforts led to 240 water rescues and first aid for over 11,400 people. Meanwhile, drowning deaths have declined compared to last year, with 321 recorded by mid-September—33 fewer than in 2024.
The summer season saw lifeguards intervening in critical situations. In Heiligenhafen on the Baltic Sea, a 49-year-old surfer was pulled from rough waters after suffering a dislocated shoulder and exhaustion. Poor visibility and disrupted radio signals made the rescue challenging. Near Schönberg, three swimmers were saved when one appeared to be dragging another underwater, while the third struggled with exhaustion.
Despite these efforts, water safety remains a concern. Over half of children leaving primary school still cannot swim confidently, largely due to a shortage of pools for lessons. Officials also warn that many accidents occur when people overestimate their abilities or ignore safety advice.
The federal government has responded by pledging €20 million by 2029 to help swimming clubs expand lessons. The DLRG expects total drowning deaths in 2025 to stay below 400, marking a continued decline from previous years.
Lifeguards have once again proven essential in preventing tragedies during the summer months. With drowning figures dropping and new funding for swimming education, authorities hope to see further improvements in water safety. The DLRG's work, alongside government support, aims to reduce risks for both children and adults in the years ahead.
