From Teacher to Baker: How State Support Transformed One Woman's Rural Dream

A former teacher in Komi has turned her love of baking into a thriving business with the help of state support. Tatiana Kukolshchikova, from the village of Vizzinga in Sysola District, now runs a dessert company known for its natural ingredients and personalised treats. Her success comes as the region pushes to boost rural development ahead of 2026, declared the 'Year of the Village' in Komi. Tatiana Kukolshchikova spent years working in education after graduating from Syktyvkar State University. She taught in kindergartens and later worked as a methodologist. But her passion for baking led her in a new direction.

In 2022, her husband's military service became a turning point. Motivated to start her own business, she applied for state funding. By 2024, she secured over 160,000 rubles to launch her dessert company. Her product range includes custom cakes, cupcakes, and cheesecakes, all made with natural ingredients. Customers praise the quality and personal touch of her desserts. Kukolshchikova's story highlights how state support and determination can transform rural entrepreneurship. The 'Rural Work: Stay and Grow' project, run by Komiinform and Rabota Rossii, aims to promote job opportunities in Komi's districts. In Sysola District alone, 105 vacancies are currently available across different sectors. The initiative encourages residents to build careers in their home villages, reinforcing local economies.

Kukolshchikova's business success reflects the potential of rural entrepreneurship in Komi. With 2026 named the 'Year of the Village', the region continues to focus on preserving and developing its countryside. State-backed projects and local initiatives aim to create more opportunities for residents like her.
