France's voiture de collection status unlocks perks for classic car lovers

France offers a special status for classic cars, known as the véhicule de collection. This classification brings several advantages but also comes with strict rules. Owners must follow precise steps to register their vehicle under this category, whether bought locally or imported from abroad.

The voiture de collection status was first introduced in the early 1960s. It was designed for older vehicles that lacked proper documentation at the time. Today, the rules remain clear: a car must be over 30 years old, no longer in production, and unmodified in terms of engine, chassis, or technical performance.

Before purchasing a classic car, buyers need FFVE approval. The Fédération française des véhicules d'époque (FFVE) or the manufacturer must confirm the vehicle's eligibility. Once approved, the classification appears on the registration document under the 'Z' heading. Applying for the special *carte grise* can be done online or through a professional. For imported cars from outside the EU, owners must provide customs form 846A, which also reduces tax costs. The benefits of this status include fewer roadworthiness tests and exemptions from certain safety equipment rules. Classic cars are also allowed in low-emission ZFE zones where newer vehicles face restrictions. However, there are limitations: significant modifications are banned, and professional use of the vehicle is not permitted.

Many French people own classic cars, drawn by nostalgia and the perks of the voiture de collection status. While exact numbers of registered vehicles remain unavailable, the process ensures only qualifying cars receive the classification. Owners must weigh the advantages against the restrictions before applying for this special registration.
