Florida woman gets 25 years for killing Black mother in disputed stand your ground case
A Florida woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of her neighbor. Susan Lorincz, 59, killed Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, after firing through a locked door in Ocala on 2 June 2023. The case drew national attention, including an Oscar-nominated documentary exploring racial tensions and self-defence laws.
Ajike Owens, an African American mother, was shot dead after knocking on Lorincz's door. Lorincz claimed she feared for her life and invoked Florida's stand your ground law. Prosecutors argued the shooting was unprovoked, pointing to Lorincz's history of harassing Black children in the neighborhood, including Owens' kids.
Owens was remembered as a devoted mother who worked hard to support her family. Her death left her four children struggling with grief and trauma. Pamela Dias, Owens' mother, took in the grandchildren and spoke openly about her fears that racial bias would prevent justice.
In April 2024, a jury rejected Lorincz's self-defence claim and convicted her of manslaughter with a firearm. She is now serving her sentence at Homestead Correctional Institution, a facility inside Big Cypress National Preserve known colloquially as Alligator Alcatraz. The case was later examined in The Perfect Neighbor, a documentary directed by Geeta Gandbhir.
Lorincz will remain in prison until at least 2049. Owens' children continue to live with their grandmother, Pamela Dias, who now cares for them full-time. The conviction marked the end of a trial that highlighted tensions over race, self-defence laws, and neighborhood disputes.
