Espresso Powder Transforms a Classic Banana Bread Recipe
Espresso Powder Transforms a Classic Banana Bread Recipe
A forgotten bag of frozen bananas led to an unexpected baking experiment. Inspired by a New Orleans pastry chef, a home cook decided to add espresso powder to a classic banana bread recipe. The result was a richer, more complex flavour that balanced the usual sweetness.
The idea came from Bronwen Wyatt, a pastry chef at La Petite Grocery in New Orleans. She recommended using espresso powder to enhance warm spices in baked goods. The cook followed her advice, stirring a teaspoon of the powder into a standard banana bread batter.
The espresso powder, made from dehydrated and ground coffee, added a subtle coffee note. This extra layer of flavour worked well with the vanilla, cinnamon, and chocolate chips already in the mix. When walnuts or chocolate were included, the coffee taste became even more noticeable.
Beyond flavour, the espresso powder also changed the bread's balance. It cut through the sweetness, making each slice taste less sugary and more rounded.
The experiment proved simple to replicate. Anyone can try it by mixing a teaspoon of espresso powder into their batter before baking. The technique offers a quick way to elevate a basic banana bread recipe with minimal effort.
