Empty Bowls fundraiser returns to fight food and housing insecurity in Alexandria

A long-running charity event is set to return this month, aiming to tackle growing food and housing insecurity in the area. The ninth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Beth El Hebrew Congregation. Organisers report that demand for support has risen sharply this winter.

The event runs from 7-9 p.m., offering handcrafted bowls made by the Alexandria Clay Co-Op and other local artisans. Guests will enjoy soups and dishes from nearby restaurants, including past contributors like Del Ray Cafe, Beeliner Diner, and Los Tios Grill. Tickets are priced at $95 each, with just over 100 still available.

This year's fundraiser comes as ALIVE!, the nonprofit behind the event, faces a 30% increase in requests for help since autumn. Rising food costs, unstable housing, and unexpected expenses have driven more families to seek assistance. The group has already collected over 15,000 meals for its 2026 food drive but aims for 50,000.

The Empty Bowls event has a history of selling out, reflecting strong community support for its cause. All proceeds will fund food, housing, and emergency financial aid programmes run by ALIVE! during the winter months.

With ticket sales underway and local businesses contributing, the fundraiser looks to build on past success. The money raised will directly support those struggling with food and housing insecurity in the region. Organisers hope to meet their meal target and expand aid for those in need.
