Đồng Nai's New Food Bank Fights Hunger and Waste in Southeast Vietnam
A new Food Bank has launched in Đồng Nai to tackle hunger and reduce waste across southeastern Vietnam. The initiative, unveiled on May 7, marks a shift from the smaller Bình Phước model to a larger, more professional operation. Organisers hope it will strengthen local poverty relief and promote sustainable development in the region. The Food Bank Đồng Nai is a joint effort between the Đồng Nai Red Cross Society and the Food Bank Network. At its launch, the network contributed VNĐ120 million to kickstart humanitarian activities. The project focuses on collecting surplus food from manufacturers, distributors, and individual donors before carefully sorting, inspecting, and storing it to meet safety standards.
Before distribution, all donated food undergoes strict quality checks. The processed items are then shared with vulnerable groups, including low-income families and students. During the launch, 30 scholarships were awarded to underprivileged students, while 20 struggling households received support packages. Nguyễn Tấn Hưng, chairman of the Đồng Nai Red Cross Society, explained that the new model modernises how social resources are gathered and used. Unlike the previous Bình Phước approach, this expanded system aims to create a sustainable food ecosystem for the entire southeast region.
The Food Bank Đồng Nai is now operational, providing structured aid to those in need while cutting down on food waste. With financial backing and a professionalised system, the project plans to improve social security and support long-term development in the area.
