Burgenland's 2024 strawberry season kicks off with premium-quality fruit
Strawberry season has officially begun in Burgenland, with fields now open for picking. The region’s main harvest takes place in Wiesen, near Mattersburg, where nearly 30 farms manage around 40 hectares of crops. This year’s yield is expected to be average in volume but of exceptionally high quality. The harvest kicked off in early summer, marking the peak period for Burgenland’s strawberry production. Most of the fruit is grown in open fields, though a growing number of farmers are switching to protected cultivation. This method helps ensure better quality and more reliable output, especially if weather conditions stay stable.
Prices for 2024 remain steady at about €13 per kilogram, matching last year’s rates. The season could run until late June, provided no extreme weather disrupts the crops. Consumers can buy the fruit directly from farms, at roadside stalls, in local shops, or through major grocery chains.
Austrians eat roughly 3.8 kilograms of strawberries per person each year. With demand strong, Burgenland’s farmers are working to meet expectations despite a slightly lower-than-average harvest. The 2024 strawberry season in Burgenland is now in full swing, offering locally grown fruit at consistent prices. While total volumes may be modest, the quality is among the best in recent years. Farmers will continue harvesting through June, weather permitting.
