Biryani reigns supreme as India's top food delivery choice in 2024

Biryani remained India’s favourite food in 2024, with over 83 million orders on Swiggy alone. The dish topped the charts again, while other popular items like dosa and choco lava cake also saw high demand across the country. New trends emerged, including a surge in dinner deliveries and a record-breaking pasta order in Bengaluru. Chicken biryani led the way as the most popular variant, with 49 million orders placed. Hyderabad stood out as the city with the highest biryani consumption, accounting for 9.7 million orders. Meanwhile, 2.8 million first-time Swiggy users chose biryani for their initial purchase.

Dosa secured second place with 23 million orders nationwide. For desserts, choco lava cake dominated, receiving 3.6 million orders. Chicken rolls were the top snack, with 2.48 million orders, while chicken burgers became the preferred late-night choice at 1.84 million orders. Dinner deliveries saw a significant rise, reaching 215 million orders—a 29% increase compared to lunch. In a standout case, a Bengaluru customer spent Rs 49,900 on pasta alone in 2024, marking one of the highest individual expenditures on a single dish.

The data highlights biryani’s continued dominance in Indian food delivery, alongside growing demand for snacks and desserts. Dinner orders now outpace lunch, reflecting changing eating habits. The record pasta order in Bengaluru also points to diverse spending patterns among consumers.
