New Beelitz Asparagus Queen Found - Beelitz Welcomes Emely Friedrich as Its 2026 Asparagus Queen
Beelitz has crowned its new Asparagus Queen for 2026. Emely Friedrich, a 21-year-old dancer and member of the Prince's Guard, will represent her hometown at local events. The official opening of the asparagus season takes place on April 9, marking the start of her year-long role.
Friedrich has long been part of Beelitz's cultural scene. She joined the Beelitz Carnival Club at just four years old and later became a dancer in the Prince's Guard, giving her experience in front of crowds. Her training at the Potsdam Employment Agency also prepared her for public-facing work—she plans to take up a clerk position at a reception desk after her reign.
The tradition of the Asparagus Queen dates back to the 1950s, when local farming festivals began honouring white asparagus cultivation. By the 1970s, Beelitz formalised the role, following similar customs in places like Schrobenhausen and Northeim. Friedrich received guidance from Maxi Hiemann, last year's queen, to help her transition into the position.
Friedrich has spoken about her excitement in representing Beelitz. The role will see her attending festivals, promotions, and community events throughout the asparagus harvest season.
The crowning of Emely Friedrich continues a decades-old tradition tied to Beelitz's agricultural heritage. Her duties as Asparagus Queen will run alongside the town's asparagus celebrations, which officially begin on April 9. After her year in the role, she will move into a receptionist position at the Potsdam Employment Agency.
