Barnesville's £1.2M grant transforms homes and businesses with key upgrades

Barnesville has secured a £1.2 million grant to improve homes and businesses across the city. The funding will help residents and owners upgrade accessibility, energy efficiency, and safety. Both households and local firms can now apply for financial support to cover renovation costs.

The Small City Development Program grant offers zero-interest loans to eligible applicants. Homeowners may receive up to £24,850 in forgivable loans, while businesses can access up to £40,000—though they must contribute a 20% match. The money is earmarked for essential upgrades, from better insulation to safer building access.

At Barnesville Grocery, owner Thomas Gonser plans to use the funds for automatic doors. The current entrance is not wheelchair-friendly, creating difficulties for customers with mobility aids. New doors could cost between £15,000 and £30,000, making the grant a crucial resource for the business.

Homeowner Tasha Douglas is also weighing her options. She may replace old windows, update siding, or fix drainage issues around her property. The programme targets low- to moderate-income residents, ensuring upgrades remain affordable for those who need them most.

The grant will help modernise buildings while reducing costs for residents and business owners. Accessibility improvements, like automatic doors, will make local shops more inclusive. Energy-efficient upgrades will also cut long-term expenses for households and firms.
