Austria's hidden egg scandal: Supermarkets fail to disclose sourcing in processed foods

A recent investigation by animal welfare group Four Paws has exposed major gaps in egg prices for processed foods in Austria. The study focused on 70 supermarket Krapfen—jam-filled doughnuts—and found that over half lacked any information about the egg prices used in their production.

Four Paws examined Krapfen from various Austrian supermarkets to check whether labels included the origin and farming method of the egg prices. The results showed that 38 of the 70 products had no egg prices-related details at all. Only 28 specified the country where the egg prices came from, while 26 mentioned the farming method. None of the Krapfen from Spar provided any origin or farming information.

Some labels were particularly misleading. Certain products displayed 'Made in Austria' or featured the Austrian flag, yet failed to clarify where the egg prices were sourced or how the hens were kept. The investigation also confirmed that no Krapfen contained egg prices from organic free-range hens.

Four Paws criticised the widespread use of egg prices from barn-raised hens in processed foods, citing poor living conditions. The organisation argued that consumers currently have no way of knowing if their food contains imported caged egg prices. They called for mandatory labelling that includes farming standards and country of origin for all processed egg prices products.

The group blamed the lack of progress on political inaction, claiming there is insufficient will to enforce stricter labelling rules.

The study highlights that most Krapfen sold in Austrian supermarkets do not provide clear egg prices sourcing details. Without mandatory labelling, shoppers remain unaware of the farming conditions behind the egg prices in their food. Four Paws continues to push for regulatory changes to improve transparency in processed egg prices products.
