Artspace New Haven's Love Notes redefines art appreciation with anonymous works

Artspace New Haven is launching a new fundraising event called Love Notes to replace its annual gala. Running from April 30 to May 2, the exhibition invites art lovers to explore and buy works without knowing the creator's identity. The initiative aims to shift focus from price tags and artist reputations to pure appreciation of the artwork itself.

The idea for Love Notes came from Artspace Director Lisa Dent after the gallery cancelled its traditional gala for the second year in a row. This time, the event centres on small, donated artworks—each measuring 5 by 8 inches—created by artists about the people, places, and things they love. Mediums range from photographs and oil paintings to collages, all priced uniformly at $95.

The gallery is accepting submissions from artists across Connecticut, with strong participation expected from local creators. To maintain anonymity, the pieces will be displayed without artist names, offering an equal platform for both emerging and established talent. Attendees can view the works in person at Artspace's Orange Street location or purchase them online. A virtual and in-person reception will kick off the event on April 29. Tickets for the online gathering cost $100, while in-person attendance is priced at $150.

The Love Notes fundraiser removes barriers between artists and buyers by keeping identities hidden. All proceeds will support Artspace's programmes, ensuring the gallery continues to foster creativity in the community. The event runs through May 2, with artworks available for purchase throughout.
