Aachen's Coronation Banquet Unites Leaders to Preserve Democracy and History

Aachen Town Hall, the historic town centerpiece, was the focal point of this year's Coronation Banquet, where leaders emphasized its role as a symbol of European democracy. The event, held to raise funds for the town hall's upkeep, also featured calls to defend democratic values against rising global threats. Over two decades, the initiative has collected around €2 million for restoration work.

The Coronation Banquet, running since 2002, has become a key fundraiser for Aachen Town Hall's preservation. This year's edition included a four-course meal, special coronation wine, and live performances by award-winning musicians. Guests gathered to celebrate the landmark while supporting its maintenance.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister-President Hendrik Wüst used his keynote speech to warn of growing pressure on democracy worldwide. He framed the struggle as a clash between democratic and autocratic systems. To rebuild public trust, Wüst argued, governments must guarantee three things: strong security, shared prosperity, and equal access to education.

The Aachen Town Hall Association outlined plans to expand restoration efforts on the building's façade. While exact numbers remain unclear, more historical figures will be repaired thanks to funds from the initiative. Dr. Michael Ziemons, the association's incoming chairman, also highlighted plans for augmented-reality tours. These digital experiences aim to make the town hall's past more engaging for visitors.

Ziemons stressed the need to preserve both the structure and the 'melody' of Aachen Town Hall—a reference to its cultural and historical resonance. The building's legacy, he noted, extends beyond bricks and mortar to the values it represents.

The banquet has now raised roughly €2 million for Aachen Town Hall since its launch. Future projects will focus on restoring façade details and introducing interactive tours. Meanwhile, leaders continue to tie the building's preservation to broader efforts in defending democracy across Europe.
