A Michelin Chef's Gourmet Twist on the Classic Egg McMuffin
A Michelin-starred chef has recreated the classic McDonald's Egg McMuffin at home—and claims his version is far superior. Greg Marchand's recipe swaps fast-food staples for gourmet ingredients while keeping the dish quick and simple to prepare.
The original Egg McMuffin was invented by Herb Peterson in 1972. It used a round English muffin, Canadian bacon, a poached egg shaped with a Teflon ring, and folded American cheese. Marchand's 2023 take, from his cookbook Moveable Feast, makes several key changes.
His version starts with a toasted brioche bun instead of an English muffin. He adds Black Forest ham alongside crispy bacon and replaces the poached egg with a sunny-side-up fried one. The cheese is melted separately before assembly, and optional extras like hollandaise sauce or truffle oil give it a high-end finish. Despite the upgrades, the dish stays easy to make. Marchand's recipe uses basic fridge ingredients—cheese, eggs, and bacon—and takes just 10 minutes. Even his family now prefers his homemade McMuffin to the fast-food original.
Marchand's recipe offers a quicker, healthier alternative to the drive-thru classic. With simple ingredients and a few gourmet tweaks, his version delivers a meal that his family—and likely many others—finds far tastier. The chef's take proves that fast food can be elevated without losing its convenience.
